Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky (07.05.1840 - 06.11.1893) - Russian composer.
Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky was born on 7 May 1840 in Votkinsk. He went down in history as a significant composer who wrote popular concertos, ballets, symphonies, operas and chamber music. Some of his works have made the list of the most famous compositions in the classical repertoire. Pyotr Tchaikovsky is considered the first Russian composer who produced a strong impression internationally.
The education of the young composer was destined for a career as a state employee but Tchaikovsky was musically precocious. In those years it was difficult to make a musical career in Russia and in addition to that there was not a system of public music education. When musical education became available Tchaikovsky snatched at a chance and entered Saint Petersburg Conservatory which was founded in 1862. In 1865 he graduated from conservatory.

The Image of Peter the Great in the English Culture, or who are Britons
The review reveals the contribution of the great British historian E. Cross to the research of the cultural memory of the Englishmen about Peter the Great (Кросс Э. Английский Петр. Петр Великий глазами британцев XVII-XX веков. М.: Европейский Дом. 2013. 230 с., илл.). The author shows that E. Cross has managed to collect unique written and iconographic material and recreate the evolution of the collective image of Russia, Russians and Peter I in the representations of the British from 1698 to the present. Particular attention is paid to the specifics of the “English view” on Russia, marked by the predominance of negative connotations of the “great reformer king of barbarous and wild Russia” in the British culture of modern times, and discovers the path of British supremacy during the 18th – 19th centuries. It is shown that the reappraisal of Peter and Russia occurs only in the scientific petrography of the 20th century, and the E. Cross’s analysis of the cultural memory of the Englishmen is a serious contribution to overcoming the dualit

Peter I (30.05.1672 - 08.02.1725) - Russian Tsar.
Peter I was born on 30 May 1672. When Peter was a child several teachers were delegated to teach him. Among Peter’s tutors were Patrick Gordon, Nikita Zotov and Paul Menesius. This process was commissioned by Tsar Alexis I.
In 1676 Tsar Alexis I died. As a result the power was left to Feodor III who was Peter’s elder half-brother. He died in 1682 and there were not his descendants. Consequently there was a conflict for power between the Miloslavsky and Naryshkin families. Other half-brother of Peter, Ivan V, was heir to the throne but his health declined. As a result at the age of ten Peter became Tsar chosen by the Boyar Duma.
Peter was interested in shipping and shipbuilding. He was a tall man and his height was about 200 cm. He did not have square shoulders and his feet and hands were small. Peter I (the First) or Peter the Great was one of the most outstanding tsars and reformers in Russian history. He ruled the Tsardom of Russia and later the Russian Empire from May, 1682 until his death. Under his rule, Russia changed from being a poor, underdeveloped country into a strong empire.
Peter the Great was born in Moscow in 1672. He was a healthy and smart boy. He occupied himself with woodwork, blacksmith’s work and printing. Mathematics, shipbuilding and navigation were the sciences that appealed most strongly to Peter. From 1682 until 1696 he reigned in Russia jointly with his sick elder half-brother Ivan. After Ivan’s death he became a sole ruler.
Through a number of successful wars against the Ottoman Empire, Sweden and Persia, Peter expanded Russia into a larger empire that became a major power in Europe. The ruler led a cultural revolution that replaced some of the medieval and outdated political and social systems with the scientific and modern ones. Peter’s state reforms made a lasting impact on Russia, and a lot of institutions of the present Russian government and military system trace their origins to that period.

Peter I, or Peter the Great was one of the most outstanding rulers and reformers in Russian history. He was Tsar of Russia and became Emperor in 1721. First he rules together with his brother, Ivan, and his sister, Sofya. In 1696 he became a sole ruler.
He was a healthy, lively and clever child. He loved military games and enjoyed carpentry, blacksmithing and printing. At the age of 17 he was married.
Peter I is famous for drawing Russia further to the Cast. He also transferred the capital from Moscow to St. Petersburg. Peter travelled much in Western Europe and tried to carry western customs and habits to Russia. He introduced western technology. He completely changed the Russian government and military system: he increased the power of the monarch and reduced the power of the boyars and the church.
In foreign policy. Peter I waged a war with Turkey ( 1695-1696) and the Great Nothern War with Sweden ( 1700-1721), and a war with Persia (1722-1723).
